Cryolipolysis (known as ‘fat freezing’), is marketed as CoolSculpting, and is a treatment that originated after researchers fully understood what happens when humans get frostbite: fat cells freeze before skin freezes. Cryolipolysis works like frostbite; it freezes fat, leaving the overlying skin intact. Following extensive research, the first cryolipolysis device was approved in 2010.
An area of skin is inserted into a freezing device for about an hour, resulting in the disappearance of some fat cells. Recently a group of Southern California plastic surgeons did a large study to evaluate treatment effectiveness and popularity. The results, published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, are titled "Broad Overview of a Clinical and Commercial Experience with cryolipolysis."
The study noted the following points:
Firstly, that Cryolipolysis is effective in reducing subcutaneous (just beneath the skin) fat volume.
Secondly, the popularity of the procedure grew dramatically over the two years studied, with 823 percent more treatment cycles delivered in 2012 than in 2010 and a growing demand for the procedure among men. Five hundred and twenty eight patients were treated with cryolipolysis in the lower abdomen, upper abdomen, left or right flank, inner thigh, back and outer thigh.
According to the leading study researcher, "With careful treatment planning, proper applicator placement, and multiple treatment cycles, cryolipolysis can produce results comparable to those of liposuction." During a cryolipolysis session, a moulded cup is placed over the stomach, love handles or other fleshy accessible areas, and heavy-duty suction pulls the fat bulge inside cryolipolysis paddles where it is chilled. Some of the fat cells in the cooled area are destroyed and ultimately disposed of by the liver. As with the ultrasound devices, there is little risk of skin injury and no change in blood levels of fats. The number of treatments needed vary, according to the amount of excess fat and the skill of the practitioner.
The best patients for cryolipolysis have fat that can be pinched and drawn into the cryolipolysis paddles. Once the fat is secured inside the cryolipolysis machine, it is cooled to the point where it is broken down. A session takes less than an hour and no anaesthesia is needed. Once an area has been treated the next area can be started.
Our equipment is of the highest standards and is very safe and fully certified. It is important for any potential practitioners to obtain training and use quality certified equipment.
With our training we give you ‘safe effective’ settings to use, ensuring that you operate competently and effectively. You will also be using protective membranes to shield the skin.
In terms of the actual procedure, occasionally the fat becomes firmly frozen, although this is rare. Immediately after treatment, the area will of course feel colder but it rarely freezes solid. To quote a practitioner: "Your skin will probably be pink for a little bit and the area treated may feel like a chilled chicken thigh, but that usually only lasts for between 30 and 60 minutes after treatment."
With the processes that the frozen fat has to undergo, results obviously aren't instant. Those undergoing the process will have to be patient. Like any cosmetic treatment, results will vary from person to person.
According to the practitioner: “Some people notice the beginnings of changes within a couple of weeks, although typically it can take up to around 12 weeks to see the full extent of the treatment, depending on your body’s individual response. The treatment does not require a course of sessions, although some people achieve a more subtle result and may wish to have a second session.
Muffin tops and love handles aren't the only places to see fat-freezing in action: any accessible fatty area can be treated effectively and safely.”
Most gym goers know that spot targeting fatty areas is an all-but impossible act and the only way to do this without dropping your overall weight is by taking cosmetic action. This treatment makes losing problem fat possible with the most common treatment; seen on the hips, abdomen, inner thighs and lower back, but it can also treat upper arms and can be used for male chest and stomach reduction.
The luxury of Fat Freezing is that there is no down time after treatment, and people can carry on with their regular life immediately after leaving the clinic. They can drive home, go to work or even the gym. Compared to liposuction, where swelling and bruising can last for months, this is a real bonus. Occasionally the cooling cup may leave a small, temporary pressure mark, but examples of bruising are pretty much eradicated by the technology on offer.
Saggy skin problem from the treatment is just a myth: the skin will tighten as the fat is reduced.
Pinkness is usually the only side effect the treatment has, as only fat cells are targeted by the treatment. The fat cells are affected but the skin isn't. The skin is very elastic and is able to accommodate changes like this, so as mentioned above it doesn't leave a saggy pocket. Where there is already loose skin, it can help make the area appear smaller as the fat layer underneath has been reduced, but it doesn't actually tighten the skin. This problem can only occur with cheap no name fat freeze machines - they also burn the skin in ‘frost bite’ fashion. This is vital: only equipment that is certified should be used, and with the correct training. This is why we offer only the best of both.
Who will benefit from the treatment?
The typical client is currently females between 20 and 50 years of age, but lately more male clients have been undergoing treatments, especially on the stomach area. The treatment is basically for anybody over the age of 18 regardless of skin types and gender.
Anybody that wants to shed some unsightly fat in problem areas but doesn’t have the time or means to go to the gym. It is ideal to supplement gym training too, by targeting those tough areas where fat just seems to be permanent, no matter how hard you work out.
For clients that can’t afford the downtime, pain and cost of plastic surgery, it offers a realistic, affordable alternative.
People who cannot undergo the treatment include pregnant women or those breastfeeding - they should not be considered for this particular cosmetic therapy. Also clients with severe medical conditions. It is suitable for most people, given they are fit and well but if they are on certain types of heavy medication then the treatment need to be adjusted. In the training pack there is a section on this; notes are also incorporated in the consultation forms the clients need to fill in before treatment. This clause is included in the training pack and equipment purchase: if the client is in doubt they are advised to consult their medical practitioner.
But ultimately the beauty of this treatment is that side effects are very minimal and only include the pinkness that lasts up to an hour after the treatment.
